Backcountry Camping Maui - Best Campsites You Have to Hike To

Haleakala National Park

Maui is an excellent place to hike, with a variety of trails and landscapes to explore. From the lush rainforests of the Hana Highway to the rugged terrain of Haleakala National Park, you get a range of options for every skill level and interest. Maui's year-round warm and sunny climate also makes it an ideal destination for hiking. But it's always a good idea to check trail conditions and regulations before you start. Some hiking trails require permits, and some areas may be closed. Once that is done, Maui has some of the best camping sites if you want to hike.

Best Campsites For Hikers

Haleakala National Park

Haleakala is a popular destination for hiking and camping on Maui, with numerous wonderful trails ranging from easy to challenging. The park has three wilderness cabins for camping. There are some backcountry camping areas as well, including Holua, Paliku, and Kaupo Gap. You can enjoy stunning views of the crater and surrounding landscape.

Sunset on Haleakalā

Haleakalā, or the East Maui Volcano, is a massive shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The western 25% of the island is formed by another volcano, Mauna Kahalawai, also referred to as the West Maui Mountains.

Sunset at the summit of Haleakalā has become increasingly popular in the last few years. There are no reservations required to enter the park for sunset, but visitors should plan ahead and be prepared for their evening trip to the summit.

Hosmer Grove Campground

Hosmer Grove is another campground located in Haleakala National Park, situated in a forested area at an elevation of 7,000 feet. The campground offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and access to hiking trails that lead to the summit of Haleakala.

Wai'anapanapa State Park

Located on the eastern coast of Maui, Wai'anapanapa State Park is a beautiful and secluded area with black sand beaches, sea caves, and lava rock formations. The park offers a campground with 12 campsites, and visitors can hike to nearby attractions such as the Wai'anapanapa Cave and the Makapipi Falls.

Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area

This state park is located in upcountry Maui and offers beautiful hiking trails through forests of pine and eucalyptus trees. The park has a small campground with several high-elevation campsites, as well as rustic cabins for rent. You have to take a short hike from the parking lot to reach the forested area with the campsites. The views of the surrounding landscape and the night sky are simply stunning.

Kipahulu Campground

Located in the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park, this campground offers beautiful views of the coastline and access to hiking trails that lead to waterfalls and pools. The campground is small, with only nine campsites, so reservations are recommended. The astounding views of the ocean are a highlight for the hikers.
